Running Success: Incredible Benefits of Tracking Miles

It doesn’t matter how big or small a running success is. They are all worthy achievements, which is why tracking miles has so many incredible benefits!

Diary of a Running Chick: November 6th, 2017

For a long time I didn’t see the true benefits of tracking miles. I would track my gym trips, but that was it. I had a wall up when it came to my running success and the benefits of tracking my miles. Questions like “Why would anyone do this?” flooded my mind. Experience taught me that if I went out and ran for 30 to 45 minutes, then it was anywhere from 3 to 5 miles. Why did it matter exactly how many miles I ran? I was looking at it completely the wrong way and missing some major running success.

The biggest reason I did not see the benefits of tracking miles was because I thought it would take too much time. In reality it takes no extra time. For example, if you run, bike, or hike then there is no reason not to use an app like Mapmyrun. All you have to do is pull up the app while you’re getting yourself together, then click start and stop. That’s it! You’re on your way to realizing major running success. And if you have a fitness or Apple watch, it’s even easier!

That was really my only reason, which was ridiculous. I didn’t want this one running success to take up all my time, or so I thought. When I finally let that go, I immediately saw all of the incredible benefits of tracking miles. It gives you a complete overview of your runs. You can review them, compare them, and use them as a tracker of your routes. I love seeing which months I ran the most and it tracks my yearly miles. I don’t have to do anything other than click start. If you run on a treadmill or a track, then you’ll need to input your miles manually. Do it right when you end your workout, during your cool down, and it won’t feel like extra work.

When you hold yourself accountable for your running success, you will truly see how easy it is to self sabotage. Even those of us who are the most dedicated to our fitness success still battle self sabotage. It’s easy to make an excuse and ignore the benefits of tracking miles. I used to spend so much time making excuses as to why I wouldn’t track my own miles. In the end, I was just afraid to experience the benefits.

Embracing the benefits of tracking miles revolutionized me as a runner. It let me embrace how much I enjoyed running, because it was so easy to see my progress. I made a pact with myself that none of the stats mattered, but the success did. It was the success of running at its purest form that became my main achievement. As long as I hold onto that knowledge, I can truly embrace my running stats for what they are, running success!

Be realistic when it comes to why you won’t open your eyes to the benefits of tracking miles. Be honesty with yourself and let go of those obstacles. This will help you stay focused on your ultimate running success; getting out for a daily run. Woo!
