Running Success: Let Go Of What Others Think | My Running Diary

Let go of what others think when it comes to your running. That is the best way to achieve running success. As long as you keep a positive mindset, it’s easier than you think!

My Running Diary: September 12th, 2018

I’m part of a large running group and I read a thread recently about a woman training for a marathon. She posed a simple question; had anyone else experienced a lack of support from their family and friends regarding their running habits? She needed to run 18 miles that day, but it was raining, so she decided to wait until later in the day. All day long her parents were telling her how she should just skip her run. The woman is training for a marathon!

That type of experience is why, long ago, I let go of what others think of my running. It’s such a personal experience and it takes your own personal strength to have running success. Yet for some reason, others want to insert themselves into what is not theirs. It took me a while to come to terms with this and simply let it go.

When I first started on my serious journey of becoming an everyday runner, I definitely got a lot of comments from my friends. I’d post updates of my journey on my Facebook page and the comments would flood on in. You might be thinking, well, you opened yourself up to anyone’s comments by going public. You’re right, I did open myself up, but I did it to keep myself accountable. Even to this day, I always post a photo from my run. It’s my way of keeping myself accountable. The noise was unexpected.

It’s imperative that when you commit yourself to daily runs, you find what works for you. My husband loves to run as much as I do, so on days we can run together, I have him by my side. That makes it so much better and that is why when someone doesn’t support your journey, you just need to tune it out.

Unfortunately, if someone else doesn’t want to support your running journey, then that’s apart of your life that they don’t need to be involved in. That’s really how you let go of what others think of your running. Remind yourself that they aren’t involved, so keep them out of it because their opinion doesn’t matter. I find this to be true about many goal orientated aspects of life. When others want to inject negativity into your life, it’s time to tune out.

Knowing how hard it is to start, maintain, and be successful in your running journey allows you to channel your running strength! I’ve been told so many times that I can’t maintain my running journey, that I don’t need to run today, or that it’s “dangerous” outside. None of that matters to me, because I know none of that is true. So many times people can’t understand something that they can’t do. For some reason, that goes double when it comes to running.

Running is my time for me. It brings peace to my day and I’ve worked extremely hard to get to the point where I can just run! I love to run and if others can’t understand that, I’m okay with letting them not understand. Let go of what others think of your running and let yourself flourish in your running success!
