My Running Diary: Planning your Holiday Runs

I’m so excited the holidays are here! I’m back East and currently looking out the window at beautiful snow. Don’t worry, I’m not going to let snow or cold ruin my runs over the holidays. I’m planning my holiday runs and holding to them!

Diary of a Running Chick: December 19th, 2016

This time of year I always check the weather prior to traveling. It gives me a better sense of when I can actually run and how to plan accordingly. Suffice to say, I planned to go running this morning, but the snow decided otherwise. I no longer have access to a treadmill, so I always bring my jump rope for days I can’t run outside. That way I can still get a cardio workout in and keep to my holiday fitness plan.

A few years ago I stopped worrying about the cold and decided running came first. Only rain or snow would stop me. Previously I did not go run if it was too cold. I’d get discouraged and I’d obsess over how cold it was. But I realized that I was missing an amazing experience! Just like running a variety of terrains, running in different climates is so different and an experience not to be missed!

The secret is to prepare for your cold weather runs and plan accordingly. I always bring my winter hat, my winter running gloves, multiple layers, and if it’s really cold I have a great fleece that I add on top to run with! Now don’t get me wrong, it’s still cold outside. But by the time I get moving, I’m warmed up and feeling fine and I’m always so grateful that I ran afterwards!

If I’m going to be on the East coast for an extended period of time over the holidays, then I set a goal in advance for my runs. Currently I am traveling for twelve days and I know that I want to get in eight runs. I already know that due to weather and some family activities, there will be mornings that I won’t be able to go out for a run, but the other days I’m running no matter how cold it is. I’ve decided I’m bundling up and going out! A little cold for 45 minutes to an hour is no big deal, especially when I feel great afterwards. It’s also a great way for me to ensure that I have my “me time” even when I’m surrounded by a lot of people.

I always have so much fun running! It’s often my favorite part of the day and truly is a significant part of my life. Just because I’m out of my element, doesn’t mean that I have to give up running. Barring intense rain or snow, I’m going to be out there kids! It also makes me feel better about indulging a bit during this holiday season!

I find that motivating and scheduling my runs during the holiday season always makes me crave my Los Angeles runs when I get home. Continuing to run during the holidays is truly a great way to keep yourself going through the last month of year. It often gets busy, but there is no reason why you can’t schedule your “you time” with some holiday runs! It’s even better if you have someone to run with you. I especially love this time of year because I get to run every day with my man and that’s way better than running by myself!
