Martha’s Vineyard Alpaca Adventure at Island Alpaca Farm

Summer is made for adventure and a trip to Martha’s Vineyard isn’t complete without an alpaca adventure! These animals are amazing and Island Alpaca Farm makes them family.

Since purchasing our vacation home on the magical island of Martha’s Vineyard, I couldn’t wait to take my grandchildren on their very own alpaca adventure. That meant a visit to Island Alpaca Farm, one of the island’s best kept secrets.

On a beautiful August day my whole family packed up the caravan and visited this charming farm where they raise the most beautiful alpacas. I absolutely love these animals! They are docile and have the softest fleece, which makes petting them so much fun. But alpacas are also playful and quirky in their own right.

Antique post-and-beam barn at Island Alpaca, that once stood in Export Pennsylvania.

Started in 2004 with eight alpacas, the farm now has a herd of over 50 animals. Martha’s Vineyard loves this farm and the staff and volunteers love caring for the animals. They breed them on the farm and are also for sale. It was interesting to discover that alpacas make great pets, as they will keep your lawn trimmed and provide excellent fertilizer known as “Alpaca Gold”. They even sell Paca Poop Fertilizer, much to the delight of my five year old grandson.

A visit to the Island Alpaca gift shop is a must. You will find a large assortment of items made from alpaca fleece, including dolls and blankets and hats and gloves. Alpaca fleece is luxuriously soft, making it perfect for sweaters, baby clothes, throws, blankets, knitted hats, gloves and so much more. You can even buy yarn for your own creations.
