Fitness Tips to stay Motivated all Year

Fitness is fun! We’re three weeks into the New Year and I’m having a fabulous time so far! It’s been cold here in Los Angeles, but a warm front is settling in. Woo-hoo! Regardless of weather, I’ve made sure to stay consistent with my workouts. I worked out everyday this year until my first day off on Tuesday January 16th! I openly document my workouts on Mapmyrun, Facebook and Twitter so I get a lot of people asking me how I keep myself motivated. Let me share the best way I know to keep motivated and some tips to stay focused!

SCHEDULE your workouts! It’s that simple. Set a time daily that you workout. If you work a nine to fiver then it’s either early in the morning, at lunch, or after work. Three options, perfect! Your first step is to schedule a consistent time. I prefer to workout in the morning, but if I have to be out the door god awful early then I make an exception. I don’t NOT workout. I figure out when I’ll be home or able to make it to a class and I commit to that time! You don’t skip lunch or a shower; so don’t skip your workout.

Be HONEST with yourself! If you’re starting to consistently workout for the first time since say high school or college, then you have to be honest and realistic with yourself. Your body may be able to run four miles right away, but don’t do it. You have to work up to that. Also, you have to build up to being able to maintain a five to six workout regimen. Just remember that being sore is good. I’m all for taking care of your body, but don’t baby yourself! Be cautious, push through and embrace the soreness and you’ll feel amazing. I promise!

Be in CONTROL of your DIET! So many people forget that what you eat matters. You can’t just workout, you need a well balanced diet to be healthy and fit. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don’t skip meals! If you’re on the go, pack yourself meals and a snack. Be wary of the pitfalls of fast food! It’s fast for a reason. Be careful of eating out too much! Restaurants are notorious for packing their meals with too much sodium. Also, remember to keep yourself hydrated daily. Sometimes you think you’re hungry, but you really just need water!

It takes 21 days to make something a ROUTINE. This may be cliché by now, but it’s true! Form a schedule and keep it up throughout January, for a full 21 days, and you’ll be on a killer path to keeping your fitness goals for the entire year. And share your goals with others! Don’t be greedy with them, partner with a friend. Try a new workout class. Go for a hike or a long walk instead, if your body is sore. Enjoy the cold weather by dusting off your snowboard or skis for a day. Just make sure you stay physical! Don’t mentally beat yourself up if you skip a day. I’m definitely guilty of this, but just get back out there the next day! If you start taking two or more days off in a row then it will be hard to get back to it. And make sure to have fun! Stay motivated and healthy in 2013!
