Becoming a Morning Runner: My Running Diary

Running in the morning is my favorite time of day to run. I know it can be hard to get up and workout first thing, but I truly believe that once you start doing it you’ll grow to love it!

Diary of a Running Chick: September 5th, 2016

When I first started running in the morning I was only 15 years old. The summer before my sophomore year of high school I began training for field hockey and we’d all meet at 6 AM to run and lift weights. At first I hated getting up that early, but I wanted to get better and even though I really dreaded it most mornings, I kept at it. I started to get used to the early exercise after a few weeks and really enjoy it. I worked out like that every summer I was in high school.

Looking back, I’m so grateful that I exercised like that when I was young. I always loved the way I felt while running. It was an awesome feeling to have put in all that work and have the whole day ahead of me. I didn’t really like running before that. I mean it was okay. I ran track, but after that first summer of early morning training I really loved running.

Not everyone starts running at a young age. I got conditioned to run in the morning, but even if you didn’t, that still doesn’t mean that you can’t become a morning runner. Just like starting to run, you need to ease yourself into it. Start by getting up early twice a week and then add on. That’s really the best way to ease into your new routine. If you’re not used to waking up early, your body will need to adjust to it.

I know for me, running in the afternoon takes WAY more motivation than running in the morning. It’s busier outside, its warmer and there are more distractions. Once you focus on the positives of running in the morning, you’ll see how wonderful it is being outside before most people have woken up. If you live in a city like me, you’ll see a completely different side of it. It’s quiet and calm! I love that.

The best motivation for becoming a morning runner is the accomplishment you get after every run! By the time most people are just waking up, I’ve already run at least five miles. That always feels great, no matter how tired I was beforehand. I always feel like I can take on the world and that motivates me throughout the entire day. I also end up craving that feeling every morning. I don’t feel like myself if I don’t go out and run!

The best advice I can give is to just try it out! What do you have to lose? You have absolutely nothing to lose at all! The best thing that happens is that you love it and want to keep doing it. Honestly, I’ve never gotten up and ran and wished I hadn’t. But I have stayed in bed and I ALWAYS wish that I’d gotten up!

Becoming a morning runner takes dedication, but it also just takes you wanting it. We all have to get up in the morning and most of the time that extra hour of sleep really doesn’t make us feel any better! Set your alarm clock. Get out of bed and go for a morning run!
