90-Year-Old Margaret Hawkins Proves Skydiving Is A Sport For All Adults

Birthdays are meant to be celebrated, yet not everyone is brave enough to do what this 90-year-old New Zealand woman did. She went skydiving!

When was the last time you tried something new?

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate your birthday, why not take after Margaret Hawkins: the 90-year-old New Zealand woman chose to go skydiving to celebrate her ninth decade on earth.

The typical altitude for a skydiving jump is around 13,000 feet. This gives the jumper around 60 seconds of free fall before they deploy their parachute and flutter safely to the ground.

Margaret Hawkins decided to consult with her physician before making the incredible tandem jump.

“I said to my physio I was going to try it on my 90th birthday,” she said.

Skydiving is a fun sport for many adults. In a tandem jump, you’re hooked to the front of a professional who ensures your safety throughout the jump. They might even be able to grab a few great photos of your first time skydiving.

Even though 69% of Millennials claim to be adventurous, few have the gall to perform the same stunt as Hawkins, who was able to survey the beautiful New Zealand landscape with a new perspective with her jump.

This comes in conjunction with the U.S. Parachute Association National Parachuting Championships held in Florida on October 2nd.

Teams from across the United States fought for the gold with four-way rotations and two-way sequential canopy formations.

The team to come out on top? Elsinore Revolution, a team based at Skydive Elsinore in California. The team was able to wow judges with quick parachute deployments and the aforementioned four-way and two-way formations.

The group was able to achieve such a show by holding onto the canopies of the others once they jump out of the plane.

Even though Margaret Hawkins didn’t participate in anything so extreme, it’s still an impressive feat for the 90-year-old. Skydiving is a sport that benefits most adults, but a number of health factors must be taken into account before a jump. Luckily, Hawkins is still in fine health at 90 years old.

She even has some wise parting words for aging adults who might be hesitant to try something new.

“Get out and do something and enjoy it,” she advised.
