5 Steps To Running Every Day | My Running Diary

Being a daily runner is easier than you think, but it does mean running every day. If its one of your goals, then you already made it easier for yourself. Running every day starts with taking a look at how you run, and putting that into perspective. These 5 steps will help you achieve the rest!

My Running Diary: October 17th, 2018

I’ve talked a great deal about how running every day was always on my list of yearly goals. I kept coming back to it, because I never felt like I had completely reached that goal. Now that I am truly a daily runner, I’m sharing the 5 steps that worked for me, because I wish someone would have opened my eyes to them years ago!

5 Steps to Daily Running

Step 1: Find the right shoes
This one took me a long time to accept and do, but it’s so important, especially if you run outside. You need the right shoes for your own unique feet. When I first dedicated myself to running outside, I thought it was okay to need to break-in my running sneakers. That left my feet so sore for the first week I ran in them. It made it extremely painful.

You DO NOT need to do this. If someone tells you that certain shoes are great, but you have to break them in, do not buy them! Right now, I’m having a love affair with these Under Armour running sneakers. They are instantly comfortable.

Step 2: Wear the right gear for you
When I used to workout at a gym, I had no problem with this. But when I fully transitioned to running outside, this tripped me up. Personally, I can’t run in shorts and t-shirt or tank top all year round. I’m always amazed when I see people who run like this when it’s cold. I’d rather be a little more on the warmer side. Figure out what makes you most comfortable. Invest in a few solid pairs of running leggings and layer, especially now that its getting cooler. I love these style leggings as well as these long sleeve running shirts.

Step 3: Track your runs
I used to say track your miles, but now I see that it’s the sheer act of tracking your runs which is important. I find that it’s a really great way to hold yourself accountable. Accountability has always been great way for me to achieve my fitness goals. When I started tracking my runs, I’d get excited when I saw a week filled with running every day. I use Mapmyrun and love it.

Step 4: Run with a partner
I love this one the most and it truly helped me with my running. I used to love running with other people in high school, but then I got out of it. It wasn’t until Dan said he’d run with me, that I truly began to love running with other people. For a short period I felt self-conscious, but through running with Dan I’ve learned that running with a partner is such a nice change of pace. I find that I’m always more motivated when I run with someone else.

Step 5: Set realistic goals
Once I learned to do this, I completely shifted and became a daily runner. You can’t go from not running to running every day. Realize that anything you have to work for takes time, and decide to give it the time it needs. I stopped setting goals for a week, month, or even six months because it wasn’t fair to myself as a runner. Without a time limit on my goal, I just realized one day that I was actually running every day. So I continued and never looked back.

There are so many mental factors that can get in the way of running every day, but I found that these 5 steps to becoming a daily runner help focus you on that end goal. Make running just like eating, sleeping, showering, and your other daily tasks. Even though my life keeps getting busier and I keep adding layers to it, I’m still on my journey as a daily runner and I love it!
