Jackfruit entered my life upon my arrival to Los Angeles. Many vegan and vegetarian restaurants I frequent have it on their menus, and one of my favorite vegan restaurants ‘Samosa House’ made me a permanent Jackfruit fan! Recently I discovered it canned at Trader Joe’s, and finally I can make this wonderful fruit at home! If you’re wondering why it’s so awesome, I’ve got five reasons for you.

Jackfruit is low in calories. One cup of Jackfruit has a little over 150 calories. That is amazing! It’s extremely filling too, because it’s rich in potassium, protein, fiber, folic acid, as well as many other vitamins! Jackfruit is used as a meat substitute often times for pork, and by comparison has a 1/3 fewer calories per cup serving. This is a great reason to try it, especially if you’re looking to lose weight!

Jackfruit improves digestion. The fruit contributes to improving digestion, since it’s high in fiber. For every 100 grams, it has 1.5 grams of fiber and 1.7 grams of protein. It causes no stomach pain when eaten in large quantities and improves bowel movement. Eating Jackfruit regularly can totally help aid in the growing epidemic of obesity in the world! So many people have stomach problems and this fruit can regulate them.

Jackfruit can be used as a meat substitute. It’s no secret that we are eating way too much meat. We use so much water and natural resources to raise cattle and other animals. Plus, the byproducts of these animals is contributing to global warming. Jackfruit is a delicious meat substitute when harvested prior to becoming ripe. Love pulled pork? This fruit is great as a “pulled pork” sandwich. It mimics the properties of many meats once cooked! I love turning an unhealthy recipe into a healthy one, and Jackfruit can definitely do that!

It’s definitely fun to incorporate a new fruit into your diet!

It’s only a $1.99 per can and is the equivalent to the canned version that has been sold at Asian markets for years. Right now Trader Joe’s offers the green young fruit in brine. This is perfect as a meat substitute! Plus, it makes it so much more attainable for the average person. That means you’ve got to incorporate it into your diet! The more people who buy it at Trader Joe’s, the better chance we have of the store continuing to stock it. This is definitely the most important reason to incorporate Jackfruit into your diet! You don’t have to search it out anymore.

Those are just five reasons to incorporate this fruit into your diet, but there are a myriad of health benefits as well. You’re definitely going to start seeing Jackfruit more and more! Honestly it’s about time, because this powerful fruit is so delicious and nutritious.
