Picking 2015 MLB over unders for wins is the perfect way to usher in the new MLB season.

The Cubs, Astros, and Phillies sucked last year, but how much will they actually rebound? And then there’s the Yankees… The 2015 MLB season is in site and we’ve got the debate.

DAN:

You found five great teams to hedge some money on this MLB season in Part one, but I’ve got five more well worth a gamble. Bovada put down the 2015 MLB over/unders for wins, but only a few will hold up.

 

TODD:

Woo boy, it’s a good thing you don’t live in Vegas! You’re taking a lot of chances with your over/under wagers.

In alphabetical order:

1) Chicago Cubs under 82½ wins

DAN: The Cubs were a bad baseball team last season, but still managed 73 victories. I don’t see them improving by over ten wins this season. Take the under and keep history on your side. Chicago may be turning a corner, but they haven’t actually turned it yet. Count them out and count your cash.

TODD: Chicago is relying on a number of unproven players for sure. It also added ace Jon Lester, arguably the best manager in baseball in Joe Maddon, all-around solid players Dexter Fowler and Miguel Montero, not to mention some of the very elite prospects in all of baseball. Lester and the position-players alone are going to be worth close to 10 wins, and that’s not even counting what having the best manager in the league is worth. At the very least, the Cubs bet is a stay-away for me. I definitely wouldn’t bet on the under.

 

2) Houston Astros under 74½ wins

DAN: The Astros were another bad baseball team, but unlike the Cubs, I think they may have gotten worse. They play in a stacked division, the AL West, and should be commended for putting up 70 victories last season. I would again commend them for doing so this year, but that means taking the under. Take the under.

TODD: The same goes for Houston but on a slightly smaller scale. The Astros aren’t going to be battling for any division title this season, but all signs point to them being on the rise. I didn’t like the over with them because the starting rotation is a question after two or three guys, but a young nucleus improving month by month is hard to pick against.

 

 

3) Los Angeles Dodgers under 92½ wins

DAN: This is just a silly line for Los Angeles. I understand giving it to the Nationals, but LA plays in a division with the defending champions. They barely got over 90 wins last season and I see no reason to assume it will be any easier. The Dodgers will be very good, but its a decent bet they don’t cross the 92.5 wins mark.

TODD: Unless you believe Howie Kendrick and Jimmy Rollins are on their way out of the league, the Dodgers are going to be one of the best teams in baseball this season. They still might not reach 93 wins though; it’s a high water mark. I’d rather stay away than pick it.

 

4) New York Yankees over 81½ wins

DAN: New York was an average baseball team last season and still won 84 games. The loss of Derek Jeter hurts, but this Yankees team is on par if not better than last year’s because the pitching is healthy. They are going to be counted out, but I expect them to at least match last season’s efforts. Over 81.5 victories is a good bet.

TODD: If the Yankees’ pitching is healthy, this is an easy cover. I didn’t want to wager on that fact, so I stayed away. I don’t blame you for picking the over on a team with a starting rotation of Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi, CC Sabathia, and Ivan Nova though.

 

5) Philadelphia Phillies over 68½ wins

DAN: Someone really hates the Phillies. They put up 73 wins last season, good for last place in the NL East. I’m on board with a decline, but they don’t have much farther to fall. Clearing 68.5 wins should not be a problem. Only two teams in baseball won less than 68 times last season. The Phillies won’t be one of them in 2015.

TODD: Other than Cole Hamels, who on Philadelphia is an above-average Major Leaguer at this point in their career? The only way the Phillies are not one of the worst teams in baseball is if a couple teams out-suck them.
